Make your own mask and play it!

Creating & Playing
Originating from the Lecoq physical theatre tradition, this workshop will be an exploration of the relationship between form, dynamics and the projection of theatrical space through materials and the poetic body.
Outline
There are 2 parts to the workshop – the first week will be making a mask and second week theatrical movement training learning about mask and unlocking the character mask you have created.
PART 1 – Mask Making in the Basement
An introduction to creating a theatrical full expressive mask, participants will be guided to use materials and techniques to sculpt, refine and paint their own full expressive theatre mask with materials, tools and training provided.
Making your own mask allows you a deeper understanding and connection to the mask, which you will be able to use in your own theatre work and play.
PART 2 – Journey of Theatrical Masks in the Ballroom
An introduction to the fun and playfulness of theatrical movement. Participants will be guided to train through different styles of mask (see examples below) focused on breath, movement and technique to embody and play a multitude of mask characters.
Participants would have a chance to explore, connect, move, increase their theatrical skills and to laugh through the journey of theatrical masks. Finally, participants would use various masks and the masks that they’ve made for a public showing.

types of mask in the Workshop
In WEEK TWO, we will layer the foundations of mask play, so that you can learn the essential ingredients to bringing a mask to life. In this mask theatre journey, we will use white larval masks to study the movement dynamics behind emotions, later applying this to more advanced and complex character masks that you will have created.

Larval Masks
These masks create a space of sensitivity and naivety.
Through breath, amplification of movement they introduce people to the silent world where these characters come to life.

Full Expressive Masks
Building on from the techniques of the Larval masks, these full expressive masks take a step towards the human, extending the journey into dramatic territories and characters.
